Pre-Built Vs. Custom Built Computers

In business, it’s easy to be tempted to find the cheapest mass-produced supplies and equipment and buy them over and over again.

Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Target, and other popular retail outlets sport their low-ticket machines on display advertising mediocre performance for school, personal, and even small business use.

But as a businessperson you also speak in the language of return-on-investment, productivity, and hassle-free. You know that there are times when you put the extra money in for quality products that will last longer and deliver above-average results.

Let me tell you from experience that computers are one of those things you want to put a little extra money into. I’ve seen so many pseudo-tech savvy business pros go out and buy the best and shiniest junk on the market, and I’ve had to try my best to make it work to (I often can’t).

There is a big different between retail shelf junk and custom-built computers. I built my first custom computer in 2010 with the help of a friend. Guess what? It’s still a workhorse able to outperform your average modern computer. 6 years? That’s a good long life for a computer these days.

Not only that but I predict it will continue to chug along for at least another 4-6 years. It can even continue at top performance with some minor upgrades along the way.

That’s about a 10-12 year lifespan of a $1000 computer build. Really not bad in comparison with spending $300-400 on a new computer every 2 or 3 years.

Oh yeah, not to mention a custom build will generally work better for you when buying quality parts for long-term usage and tailoring them to your specific needs. That means no bottleneck, less headache, and no wasted money on components you don’t need or want.

Have I convinced you? I hope so, because it’s not fun when people ask me to make their ’87 Pinto go 250MPH. It’s not gonna happen. Building a machine from the ground up is like getting a tricked out Nascar. Well, except a lot more practical.
